The difference between dynamic IP address and static address

An IP address is a unique ID number used by your computer to connect to the Internet. The dynamic IP address option is the default for all BT Business Broadband products. This makes your IP address change whenever you connect to the Internet. You should use a dynamic IP address if you plan to have:

  • Several computers on an internal network with Internet access on all of them.
  • A single computer that connects to your head office on a one-way Virtual Private Network (VPN). A dynamic IP address is not suitable if you want a computer to be permanently visible on the Internet.

A static IP address is a predefined IP address that remains fixed each time you connect to the Internet. You should use a static IP address if you want your computer to be permanently visible on the Internet, for example, if you plan to:

  • Host a website, mail server or file server on your own computer.
  • Set up a VPN between your company’s offices.
  • Use certain conferencing applications.

If you wish to change your IP address option, please contact us.
